The La Luz Pottery Factory
Around 1930, Roland Hazard started the La Luz Pottery Factory. Hazard was a Rhode Island native who came from a wealthy family. The rich clay deposits in the area made it a suitable place from which to harvest the materials needed to make pottery. The factory made the clay roofing tiles that are so familiar in southwest architecture as well as pots during operations that lasted until the early forties. At its height, the factory shipped its goods all over the United States and highlighted the artistic side of La Luz. (Threinen) The buildings stand today somewhat dilapidated, but are being preserved by the Tularosa Basin Historical Society.
